Abstract:

In Iranian painting, the interpretation of an artist’s perspective can be understood by examining the illustration of texts and fixed themes by prominent artists. From this perspective, the issue of the artist’s interpretation of literary texts holds paramount importance, and in illustrating various versions of these texts, artists have incorporated their personal interpretations of the original text, creating additional meanings beyond the content of the work. In the depiction of Khamseye Nizami in the Tabriz School of Safavid painting, artists have indeed created different layers of meaning essentially indicating the authorship of the artist in portraying scenes from Khamseye Tahmasbi. One of the artworks in which the artist has created an additional layer of meaning as the author is the painting “Shapur Showing the Portrait of Khosrow to Shirin”, by Mirza Ali in Khamseye Tahmasbi located in the British Library. This study is aimed at answering the question: What are the hidden layers of meaning in the painting “Shapur Showing the Portrait of Khosrow to Shirin”? The goal is to analyze the painting at three stages according to the iconology pattern of Erwin Panofsky to identify its layers of meaning through this method: pre-iconographic description, iconographic analysis, and iconological interpretation. This research, conducted through descriptive analytical methods and library research, reveals that instead of adhering to Khamseye Nizami, implying the image of Khosrow’s face being shown to Shirin by the servants and expressing a romantic atmosphere, here the artist himself is doing it. In this artwork, we are surprised to witness Shapur the painter performing this act, and he has portrayed Shirin and the servants with an anxious and surprised demeanor. The artist conveys moral messages to the king and the court of the Safavid era, indirectly and metaphorically. It serves as a warning symbol of the excessive prejudice, anger, injustice, and tyranny in the Safavid era, finally leading to the downfall of the monarchy. In fact, the creation of this artwork is rooted in the artist’s political, social, and to some extent, spiritual and religious perspectives, derived from the social conditions and wisdom of that era.

Abstract:

Oxynoemacheilus chomanicus is an endemic loach species in Choman River drainage of Kurdistan Province (Iran). In this study we evaluated the morphological variation of body shape among different population of this species from three main tributaries of Choman River; Baneh, Boein and Shooei Rivers. A total of 92 specimens were examined using geometric morphometric method. Using the photographs from the left side of specimens 14 landmarks and 2 semi-landmarks points were selected and analyzed using PCA and CVA methods. Results obtained indicated significant differences between studied populations, especially in head, caudal peduncle and dorsal fin base parts of the fish body.

Abstract:

Background: Barbituric acid derivatives have long been used as central nervous system (CNS) suppressants, such as sedatives, hypnotics and anticonvulsants. In addition, previous studies have implicated the involvement of nitric oxide (NO) in the anticonvulsive effects of barbiturates in CNS. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to figure out the effects of a novel class of barbituric acid derivatives on pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures in male mice. Methods: Thirteen synthesized barbituric acid derivatives (a-m) and phenobarbital were administered intraperitoneally (i. p. ) 30 min before induction of seizures by PTZ administration. The mechanisms of PTZ-induced seizures in the mice was evaluated using a non-selective nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, selective inducible NOS (iNOS) inhibitor, a selective neuronal NOS (nNOS) inhibitor, and NO substrate. Results: Administration of most of the above mentioned derivatives significantly increased the seizures threshold (P<0. 001). The most potent derivative (compound a), was chosen in order to investigate the mechanism of action involving in anticonvulsant activity. Administration of a non-selective NOS inhibitor, NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and a selective nNOS inhibitor, 7-nitroindazole (7-NI) reversed anticonvulsant activity of compound a. However, injection of the nitric oxide precursor, L-arginine (L-Arg) and a selective iNOS inhibitor, aminoguanidine (AG), did not change anticonvulsant activity of the mentioned compound. Conclusion: These results indicated that the NO system, specifically nNOS may contribute to the anticonvulsant activity of benzylidene barbituric acid derivative a. Therefore, this compound is a good candidate in order to designing new anticonvulsant medications.

Abstract:

Background: Hepatitis C is prevalent among thalassemia patients in Iran. It is mainly transfusion mediated, in particular among patients treated before 1996 when blood screening was introduced. Objectives: The current study aimed to investigate why patients still seroconvert to anti-HCV in Iranian thalassemia centers.Patients and Methods: During 2006-2007 sera were sampled from 217 anti-HCV positive thalassemia patients at nine thalassemia centers in Tehran and Amol city, where 34 (16%) patients had been infected after 1996. The HCV subtype could be determined by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of partial NS5B and/or 5 ׳NCR-core region in 130 strains.1a (53%) was predominant followed by 3a (30%), 1b (15%), and one strain each of 2k, 3k and 4a. Phylogenetic analysis revealed 19 clades with up to five strains diverging with less than six nucleotides from each other within subtypes 1a and 3a. Strains in seven clades were from nine patients infected between 1999 and 2005 and similar to strains from eight patients infected before 1996, indicating ongoing transmission at the centers. Further epidemiological investigation revealed that 28 patients infected with strains within the same clade had frequently been transfused at the same shift sitting on the same bed. An additional eight patients with related strains had frequently been transfused simultaneously in the same room. Conclusions: The results suggest nosocomial transmission at these thalassemia centers both before and after the introduction of blood screening. Further training of staff and strict adherence to preventive measures are thus essential to reduce the incidence of new HCV infections.
